An Excess of Freedom
Okay, with my back feeling a lot better today, and now that I seem to be seeing the last of whatever cold has been bugging me, I am now able to consider what to do with the rest of my life. To be honest, I've spent the last few weeks just agonizing on how sick I've been, and now I'm trying to figure out what to do with my dynamic new lifestyle.

Basically, I can do anything. My wife is making money now, so we're not in any dire need for funding. I don't have a job, so my day is pretty much free. Now, I have spent the last seven years of my life as a video game programmer, and I've spent the last twenty-five years of my life programming, so it's a pretty good guess that I'm going to fall back in with programming. But at least, I have the chance now to consider alternatives.

For instance, here's a brief list of the things I'm currently working on:
  • Children's story based on Grimm's fairy tale format.
  • Novel based on cryogenic freezing.
  • Treatise on the state of ethics in video games.
  • Small Civ-clone for the PC/Pocket PC.
  • Web-based (using Laszlo) MMORPG City builder game.
  • This blog.

So, there's a lot of stuff there, and most of it is writing (wonder if I should put Linux on my laptop, if I don't need MSDev), but even that is just scratching the surface of "what should I do". For instance, I want to get back into Tae Kwon Do, I want to take guitar lessons, I could be a damn fine actor (character actor, probably).

Here's the really weird part. This freedom scares the bejesus out of me. I'm almost paralysed with fear, not the fear of doing the wrong thing, but just the fear of the decision itself. That's why I think I've spent so much time wallowing in sickness, rather than doing anything.

So, little help here guys. What would you do if you could reinvent yourself today?

Comments:
go back to english and writing probably.. i want to do that anyway once i've made a million..
else, sit at home and play games, and watch movies. my ideal job woul be one where i am paid to write stories, while having to watch free movies and play games for a living.
any vacancies ?

If I had free time, I'd find a good needed open source project and contribute my talents.

There is a lot of need for seasoned programmers...

Hmmm . . . Hadn't thought about that. Know of any projects that need a hand?

Whoops, it took me a while to get back here.

I think the biggest lack in open source right now is quality games. I haven't read enough of your blog to know how you feel about writing games these days, but if you aren't burnt out, this is a great place to contribute. I think the gaming engine loki (http://www.lokigames.com/) developed before going defunct is pretty good.

A good semi-educational kids game would be nice. Maybe gamify your Grimm's fairy tale childrens story? I've got a three year old who loves clicking around on the computer...

Plugins for firefox/mozilla to handle some of the odder content streams would be nice as well...

Check out sourceforge for projects that are looking for help.

Good luck!

Well, I'm not burnt out on games apparently, because I'm still spending about four hours a day on GTA. Also, I'm still working on the PocketPC/WinXP Civilization clone.

I'm sure you're going to think me a pathetic shmoe for this, but I've never done any Linux development. Every six months or so, I take a computer and put a Linux distro on it. I play with it for a few days, trying to get Samba to work, trying to get Apache to work, and eventually, I just get so infuriated with it I just wipe the system.

For instance, about three months ago, I installed a development distribution so that I could write code for Linux. There was no documentation (man files are crap for documentation), the compiler couldn't find any of the directories it needed to build anything, I couldn't find the config file to point to those directories, it was just a nightmare. And that was just trying to build a 'Hello World'. Compare that to MSDev, which has a full installer, detailed hypertext documentation, and wizards to build basic programs from the very beginning. I mean, I don't need my hand held through the whole process, but I am the type who wants to work on the project, not on the interface. In my opinion, Linux is still programming for Assembly fans.

Anyway, I'm rambling here. I really like the idea of gamifying the Grimm's Fairy tale. It would take some design though, hmmmm . . .

I guess I'll take a look at SourceForge, too, and see if I can lend a hand on that. Thanks for the help!
